CC Out Duels Beckett, Earns Series Win

Yanks pound out five homers to take rubber game in Boston.

Why do we even try to predict baseball? Anyone you ask would have said that todays game would finish, 1-0 or 2-1. Nope, it finished 8-4, not to mention the five home runs the Yankees hit of Josh Beckett. Don’t you find it interesting how the Yankees can’t hit Luke French, but have no problem hitting Josh Beckett? Pretty odd.
It didn’t take long to see what kind of game it was going to be. Jeter led off the game with a home run to right center on the first pitch of the game. Matsui led off the second with a homer. An RBI single by Teixeira and an RBI ground out by A-Rod, gave the Yanks two more in the third. Cano hit a shot in the fourth, and A-Rod hit a two-run blast in the fifth to give the Yanks their seventh run. Then, what a surprise, Matsui went yard (again) in the eighth to cap off the Yanks eight run, five homer outburst.
The Red Sox scored on RBI’s by Baldelli and Varitek in the second, a run scored on a Robbie Cano error in the fourth, and a sac fly by Baldelli in the sixth.
Lets talk about the Yankee defense today, it was terrible! Countless pop-ups were dropped, players were huddled up watching fly balls hit the ground, it was atrocious. This entire series has been very sloppy for both teams. If you hurry up, I bet you can get a job playing some defense for the Yanks.
Beckett threw 120 pitches and gave up eight runs in eight innings pitched. He has now given up eight home runs in his last two starts. Lots of eights.
CC, on the other hand, was pretty good. He gave up four runs in 6.2 innings, while striking out eight batters. Good job by the Red Sox taking pitches and fouling off some tough pitches.
Hughes pitched a scoreless inning and a third, and Mariano nailed it down with a scoreless ninth. No save, but I’ll take it.
Player of the Game: Hideki Matsui: 2 for 4, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, SO
The Wrap-Up:
Keep winning series, that’s what it’s all about. The Yankees are now 7.5 games ahead of Boston, and I think that Red Sox will finally tell you that the Wild Card is their goal. The Yanks are looking good, that’s all there is to it, all you can ask for now is that they don’t pull a 2008 Mets.
Coming Up Next:
The Yanks are off tomorrow before starting a six game home stand beginning with Texas. The Red Sox open up a set against the White Sox in Fenway.

Yankees Probable Pitcher:

A.J. Burnett.jpg
A.J. Burnett
#34 RHP
(10-5) 3.71 ERA 145.2 IP 130 SO 1.394 WHIP
Following porbably his best start of his career, Burnett was shaky against the Blue Jays in his last start. He surrendered three runs in six innings giving up 10 hits and throwing two more wild pitches. In his career at the Coliseum, Burnett has a 2.13 ERA. Against Oakland over the course of his career, A.J. is 2-2 with a 4.14 ERA and a WHIP of a little over one and a half. Since Burnett’s horrible start in Boston, he has an ERA of 2.50 in 11 starts.
Tidbits:
No Athletics hitter has more than three hits against Burnett in their careers. Mark Ellis has the most PA against Burnett with 18. The Yankees are 16-7 when Burnett starts the game. The Yankees score an average of 5.83 runs scored when Burnett is on the mound.
Key to the Game:
The Athletics bullpen has an ERA of 3.76, which is considerably better than any of their starters. Its up to the Yanks to get to the starters, and get a lead before getting into that strong bullpen.
Athletics Probable Pitcher:

Brett Tomko.jpg
Brett Tomko
#23 RHP
(1-2) 5.23 ERA 20.2 IP 11 SO 1.258 WHIP
Brett was designated by assignment by the Yankees on July 22, and will be making his first appearance tonight as an Athletic. Brett made his last appearance as a Yankee on July 11th, when he gave up one run in 1.1 innings against the Angels. In five career games against the Yankees, Tomko is 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP over two. In 260 career starts, Brett has an ERA of 4.66.
Tidbits:
A-Rod is 4 for 8 with two home runs in his career against Tomko. Johnny Damon has the most PA against Tomko in his career with 18.
